DoubleTree by Hilton Cape Town – A Gem in the City

Down in the narrow streets of Woodstock, you’ll find remnants of a colourful past and a bright future. The streets brim with independent shops and cafes and the suburb has an arty side that’s far from overlooked. While plenty has changed, DoubleTree by Hilton has a fun, rebellious streak that’s perfect for the young and innovative business traveller. Here’s a look into my stay at this beautiful hotel.

Checking In:

I arrived in Cape Town after a 15 hour long drive from Johannesburg. I was sweaty, exhausted and just not ready to see the world. With all those emotions swirling in my cortex, the folk at reception were an absolute delight – patient, polite and proactive. Checking in took less than 3 mins and I walked away with a gigantic warm chocolate cookie! The one thing everyone needs at 10pm on a Tuesday night!

Forget the dull decor many hotels have these days, DoubleTree’s glass lobby is a personal favourite: this place is a riot of colour and character and cleverly blends modern art with mid-century elements.


My suite was lovely in its own way: its checks all the boxes of an executive hotel but adds subtle touches of space, colour and smells that makes you feel special. A small pile of magazines and great artwork adds a homely feel while the delightful coffee station gently says “If you need to work through the night, we got you!”

The large, extra long bed was wonderful to sleep in. I get home sick often and don’t usually sleep well at night. Some say insomnia but I think my body likes things a certain way and won’t let me rest until it’s sorted! But after 5 nights at DoubleTree – not even babies slept that good!

The shower could fit a basketball team. And considering how large those players are – its saying something about the sheer size of that room. I didn’t indulge as much as I wanted to as preserving water is still a concern in the city.

The Food:

Breakfast: There was nothing spectacular about the breakfast. A generous full English breakfast was on display with a variety of muffins, yoghurts, sausages and bread every day. I did enjoy the churros one morning and I think other guests did too because I didn’t see them again after that! The first day made me feel like I was standing in New York City trying to hail a cab. I just couldn’t seem to get service quick enough – the coffee was forgotten and finally showed up as I was leaving. Each day got better as a quick word with the maitre d’hotel sorted it out.

Dinner: I was surprised by how affordable the food was. Each night I tried something new – from the chicken prego, house beef burger, buffalo wings to the prawn linguini. No matter how full I was, I didn’t want to stop eating – that would be a waste of good food! I wasn’t too keen on their dessert offerings so stuck with the chocolate nemesis every night. Maybe a death-by-chocolate cake? Or an assortment of ice cream on a bluberry waffle? Some of us enjoy the simple things too!

Rating: 7/10 – DoubleTree is THE SPOT for independent creatives and focused business travellers who need to be close enough to the CBD to never be late for anything and far away from the tourists and their constant selfies! Whenever I’m in Cape Town, this is one of my top 10 places to stay. Despite the restaurant hiccup, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
