What on earth were we thinking? Who on earth would take two very different cars on a battle royale off road?The Mercedes-AMG G63 versus the Suzuki Jimny. Why not you ask? Well you’re right. Why not! Sure there’s a massive price gap but how do these two car fair on performance? We took the test to the small adventure town of Cullinan, Pretoria .
We got the two square-body 4x4s together to find out if the little 100-horsepower Jimny could keep up with the 577-horsepower twin-turbo V-8-powered G-Wagen through a challenging off-road course. Though the Mercedes G63 easily trounces the Suzuki Jimny in straight-line speed, once the two trucks arrive at the tough mudding sections, the tiny Suzuki keeps up just fine. It’s able to wade through trenches, climb steep inclines, and clear deep ruts just as well as the big Mercedes. Though it doesn’t have Mercedes’ ability to select locking differentials, the cheerful Jimny still has a low-range transfer case, which proved extremely useful.
Sure, the Jimny might not have a Bang & Olufsen sound system, soft leather, a 4.4-second 0-60 time, a 149-mph top speed, or a nice V-8 rumble, but the Jimny is still one hell of an off-roader.
