Gallivant Africa was granted exclusive access to witness a groundbreaking collaboration between KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and South Africa’s premium carrier LIFT, as the airlines transformed ordinary domestic flights into extraordinary Dutch-inspired experiences on May 21, 2025.

The in-flight activation saw KLM and LIFT convert two domestic routes – the 9:30 AM Johannesburg to Cape Town flight and the 4:00 PM return service – into immersive celebrations of Dutch culture and world-class aviation hospitality. This marks a significant milestone in how international carriers are reimagining partnerships with African airlines to enhance the continental travel experience.

“What we witnessed wasn’t just airline marketing – it was a masterclass in experiential travel that could reshape how African passengers engage with international carriers,” observed Ashton, Aviation and Tech Editor at Gallivant Africa, who documented the unique bingo-at-altitude experience.

The activation featured surprise in-flight bingo games with prizes from iconic Dutch brands, including Tony’s Chocolonely, G-STAR RAW, and KLM, with some passengers winning international flight vouchers. Each traveller received KLM’s signature amenity kits, ornamental Dutch houses, traditional stroopwafels, embassy-sourced clog ornaments, and premium chocolates.

Mid-flight entertainment included Palettes of Joy artists creating passenger caricatures while airborne, alongside specially designed Dutch-inspired boarding passes and exclusive 10% discount codes for future KLM bookings.

Redefining African Aviation Partnerships

This collaboration represents a significant evolution in how international carriers approach African markets, moving beyond traditional code-sharing arrangements to create immersive brand experiences that celebrate local partnerships while introducing global hospitality standards.

“This collaboration is all about celebrating the joy of travel, the magic of mid-air moments, and the spirit of partnership,” stated Haydn Henning, Brand Manager at LIFT. “We are always looking at ways to ‘Surprise & Delight’ our passengers and what better way to do that than with a few rounds of Bingo, great prizes and good laughs at 36,000 feet.”

Wilson Tauro, Country Manager Southern Africa at Air France-KLM, emphasized the strategic importance of such initiatives: “South Africa is an incredibly important market for KLM, and this collaboration with LIFT is a fun and creative way for local travellers to engage with the KLM brand. Our goal was to deliver a memorable surprise that not only celebrated our Dutch roots but also gave passengers a little taste of what flying with KLM feels like.”

Impact on African Aviation Landscape

The KLM-LIFT partnership demonstrates how strategic collaborations can elevate the African travel experience while maintaining authentic local connections. This initiative represents a new standard of in-flight engagement for African travellers that goes beyond traditional service models to create memorable, culturally rich experiences.

The activation aligns with broader trends in African aviation, where airlines are increasingly focusing on experiential travel rather than merely transportation. This approach not only enhances passenger satisfaction but also strengthens brand loyalty and market differentiation in an increasingly competitive continental aviation landscape.

As African airlines continue to forge meaningful partnerships with international carriers, initiatives like this KLM-LIFT collaboration set precedents for how such alliances can benefit local passengers while expanding global reach for African aviation brands.
